What Is IMAP Email Configuration?

The IMAP email transmission protocol is considered by some to be the ultimate protocol configuration. This protocol synchronizes mail stored and retained on the mail server with a local copy downloaded to an email client program such as Outlook, Thunderbird, Eudora, Entourage, or others. This differs from POP3 where upon connection, all email is downloaded to the local computer.

This protocol offers the advantage of using your favorite local computer's email client, while also keeping a copy of all emails on the email server. This synchronization allows you to also use a web mail interface from any computer with an internet connection. Another benefit of this synchronization behavior is having an ad-hoc backup of your email both on the mail server and on your local computer.
