What Is A Mail Server? Print E-mail
A mail server is a server that receives your email on the internet and stores it until you connect.  At that pint the mail server will download the email to your local computer or if you are using a web mail interface, it will allow you to interface with your email, while retaining it for later disposition.

As an example, if you have Bellsouth/ATT for an internet provider, you're probably using their mail server.  People send you email at something like This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Bellsouth maintains dedicated email servers to receive this email and store it until to connect and personally receive your email.

Just as it receives email, the mail server actually sends mail across the internet to your intended recipient.  You compose your email and when you tell your program to "send", it uploads or sends the email to your mail server first.  Your mail server will then locate the mail server of the recipient and transmit the email to its destination.
