What Are Backup Mail Servers

Backup Mail Servers are servers that will respond and receive and sometimes send email for you or your domain when your primary mail server is unavailable. This is not the same as load balancing. A backup mail server will only respond while your primary mail server is down. In most cases once your primary mail servers is once again responding, the backup server again becomes passive.

Backup mail servers can be fully functioning mail servers where you will not notice if it engages or not. Another common type is known as "store and forward". In this model, when the primary server is not reachable, new incoming email is routed to the backup sever where it is stored. Once the primary mail sever comes back online, all stored email is then forwarded to the primary.
