How Does Email Work? Print E-mail
In broad terms, email is the electronic message transmitted between a sender and a recipient.  Functionally, the sender composes the email and sends it.  At this point the email goes from the senders computer, or web mail interface to his mail server for delivery to the outside world.  The sender's mail server finds the mail server of the recipient and transmits the email to it.  The email is stored on the recipient's mail server until the recipient connects to this server and retrieves the email using a web mail interface or by downloading it to a local email client.
