What Is An SSL Certificate? Print E-mail
An SSL (Secured Socket Layer) certificate has two primary functions.  First it verifies and identifies your site as being the actual site it says it is.  Secondly, it supplies an end-to-end encrypted tunnel between your computer and the website it is installed on.  This assures secure, encrypted communication with websites which you are sending sensitive personal information.  An SSL connection and certificate is required by most online payment gateways and merchant services.  An SSL connection is easily identified by the http: in the address bar being replaced with https:.
