What is TLD - SLD? Print E-mail
TLD and SLD refer to different levels or parts to a domain name.  TLD, or "Top Level Domain" the part of the domain name behind the "dot".  TLD's are regulated and registered through domain registrars or resellers and are standardized.  Examples of TLD's are the common .com, .net, .org and so on.

SLD, or "Second Level Domain" is less common term describing the public part of the domain name that you can pick and control.  It's the part of the domain name in front of the "dot".  When you register a domain you would pick the SLD you wanted, in conjunction with a standardized TLD.

As an example, if you sold purple fence posts, you might want to register a domain "purplefence.com".  The "purplefence" is the SLD, or public portion of the domain and ".com" is the standardized TLD.  You can also have the same SLD on different TLD's such as purplefence.com, purplefence.net, purplefence.org and so on.
