A domain name is a human friendly name used to identify and locate devices or websites, or send email on either a private network or the internet.  It is an alias for and linked to your website's IP address.  In short, it is your defined space on the internet, where people will go to find your website, and how people will address your email.  As an example, at this site, larrydearing.com is the domain name.

Domains are registered at a Domain Name Registrar.  Once you own your domain name, you "point" that name to the location of your hosted website.  You can also arrange to have email sent to your domain also. 

Caution should be taken in considering the acquisition of a domain name as there are many services that offer free domain names and hosting packages where you may not actually own the domain.  Another practice is to offer a place to have a blog or forum without having your own domain name, using "space" under the provider's domain.  It is always recommended to register your own domain so that you know you own it and control it.
