What Is Propagaton?

Propagation is a process and a timeframe for DNS record changes at the authoritative name servers for a domain to be duplicated and updated on all DNS servers around the internet. When you make a DNS record change, you do it on your authoritative server only. From there all other DNS servers must update its old information for your domain. Each DNS server around the internet has its own cycle of checking for updates.

Traditionally "they" say expect about a seventy two hour period for any DNS record change to be propagated to all DNS servers. However, in practice, you will be about 50% propagated in a couple hours, and about 80% propagated in about six hours. This propagation period should be taken into consideration whenever DNS record changes are planned.
