What Is DNS - How Does It Work? Print E-mail
DNS, or the Domain Naming System is how your computer finds the IP address of another device or webpage on a private or public network like the internet using a human friendly host name.  Every website has an IP (internet protocol) numerical address in the form of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.  To keep from having to use these difficult numerical addresses DNS ties a friendly unique name or alias to an equally unique IP address.  That way when you type in an address like http://www.domain.com, DNS will translate it behind the scenes to the actual IP address for that website.

Functionally, when you try to access a website by its domain name, the request is sent out name servers on the internet that will tell your computer what the actual address is.  Once your computer has the actual numerical IP address of the website in question, it can then connect directly with the site.  All of this happens behind the scenes with no manual intervention.  In short, DNS is the heart of the internet resolving easy to remember names to the more difficult unique IP address of our targeted destination.
