What Is An SPF Record

An SPF, or Sender Policy Framework, record is a DNS record for a domain that determines which servers and alternate domains may be allowed to send email on its behalf. Though this record is optional, simply put, without this control record, your domain name could easily be spoofed as sending fraudulent email from a third party spammer.

Many email servers will check all incoming email to see if the domains have an SPF record, and if so is the email coming from an authoritative source for that domain. If the actual sending location is not authoritative for the domain, the email is rejected. More and more email servers are not delivering email for domains that do not have an SPF record and its inclusion in a domain's DNS zone records is highly recommended.
