What Are Backup Name Servers Print E-mail
Backup name servers are as the term sugests, backups to an authoritative name server for a domain.  Domain Name regulators require that a domain have at least two name servers.  Backup domain servers are the second, third, fourth, and so on to serve up domain and dns information.  These are truly backup servers and do not load share or divide geographically.  Name servers are contacted in the order they are listed in a domain's DNS records.  If the first, authoritative name server cannot be contacted, requests go to the second if available, then through subsequently listed backup servers.  If no name server can be located for a domain DNS request, the IP will not be discovered and the web page will not be connected to.
