Part 1: Online-Tools I get a lot of people asking me what type of software and on-line tools I use in website creation and site administration I use so I’ve decided to list out some of my most frequently used. These on-line resources can be a quick way to get answers, test sites, and produce bits for your website.
There are a lot of on-line tools I use from time to time. Below is a quick description of those I use almost weekly, at least. You can get a longer list of great on-line resources in my Resource Links area.
Favicon Generator – This site allows you to quickly generate favicons (those little icons that show up in the address/URL area in your browser) by simply uploading an image, clicking “generate”, then downloading the resulting favicon ready to include on your website. http://favicon.htmlkit.com/favicon/
W3C Validation/ CSS Validation – Here you can check the validation of your website coding against W3C standards. You can simply put in the URL of your site or page you want to check or you can cut and paste code bits to check their validity. There is also a link on the page to check for your CSS compliance as well. http://validator.w3.org/
IntoDNS – This is my favorite DNS checking tool. DNS is the heart of your website hosting and record administration and it’s a good place to turn when you’re configuring new email servers, pointing a website to a host, and assigning or customizing name servers. http://intodns.com/
On-line Color Schemer – I use this on every template re-coloring or branding project. You can put in hex or RBG code for a color and see color variants that compliments it. This is also a great way to “see” what colors are being called when you’re looking at various CSS elements. http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html
Lorem Ipsom Content Generator – Lorem Ipsom is that funny Latin looking text you see in many website and template demos to simply fill in space. I use this when doing demo and concept sites for clients where I want them to see what text areas of a webpage are going to look. Simply tell it how many lines of this random text you want, then cut and paste into your page. http://www.lipsum.com/
Page Load Speed Test – I use this site in many projects where I want to select and develop a light weight fast loading template. With quality points being given by Google for speed of page load, it’s a great analytic tool. Ideally you want your site to load in 10 seconds or less. http://tools.pingdom.com/
Again, there are many more great and useful on-line resources and tools out there and many more I use from time to time. This short collection is my favorite or most used subset. If there are some other on-line tools you use constantly, please let us know!
