What email address does your web host use to contact you? That sounds like a silly question but depending on a couple of circumstances this email address may not work and you may subsequently not receive important information about your account. So, how can you make sure your web host, or other important service providers can reach you?
Always make sure your main contact email you provide to your hosting provider are not tied directly to that hosting account. In that way, if something shuts down the hosting account such as a billing issue or a major hacking incident, or the server goes down, you will still be able to be notified.
I know this should be simple common sense, but I often run across people on web hosting forums that complain about their accounts being shut down for whatever reason and they weren't notified by their web host. Upon further questioning, this almost always is a result of their contact email address being caught up in the problem and they hadn't really thought about it before.
Here's a quick example: Lets say your hosed domain is "domain.com" and the contact email your hosting provider is mailto:
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
. %20If your email address is part of the hosted account and there is a problem that shuts down your hosting account, you may not get your email because it cannot be sent from or to your account. This is of particular concern to those hosted on the very common Cpanel shared hosting environment.
The best way to avoid this is to use a separate email address like

, or to have your main domain's email hosted at a third party provider. If your email is actually a separate account from you hosting, even from the same provider you are probably alright.
Always use a contact email that is independent of the hosting account just in case! You always want to be notified about business concerning your accounts. |
