Free Domain Names - Really? Print E-mail

Many people spend a lot of time developing websites on free domain names, only to lose them when renewal comes up, or they find out they didn't really control the name. Domain Names are so cheap I really don't get it.
 
I particularly like the offerings of "free domain name for life".   Who's life?  Your life?  Their life?   If they were honest, they would say for the life of their company, which for a company pushing nothing but free stuff could be a matter of months.  Also, a lot of people offering free domain names aren't really offering domain names but "namespace" on their own domain as a sub domain or directory like "freedomain.provider.com or "provider.com/freedomain." 

If you're serious about your on line presence, you must consider your branding effort.  Domain names are very inexpensive and gains you an immediate degree of credibility over those not utilizing their own namespace.
