Time For Your Website Check Up? Print E-mail

We get busy with our marketing, our social networking, our blogging, and our sales or production efforts.  Sometimes we forget to periodically focus a critical eye toward our websites.  For your web presence, professionalism is both in the way your web site looks and in the way it functions behind the scenes.

This short reminder is offered as a starting point for a review of your web site for both presentation and functionality. Check ups of this type should probably be performed on a regular basis, and depending on the frequency of your content or marketing direction changes, should probably be done at least annually.

Take a few minutes and run your site through this simple check, making notes where you need to correct, edit, or enhance.

  • Make sure you have no dead or broken links.  From no fault of your own, "link rot" occurs due to the link target moving or disappearing.  Test both external and internal links and make sure all your main menu links are good.
  • Review your graphics and make sure they are working for you. Make sure you are using good "alt text" and titles for the search engines to grab on to using your targeted key words.  Make sure all graphics are the right quality, size, and placed well.
  • Check consistency between and across your website. Check your headings, subheads, and body text for consistent font size, weight and color.
  • Spell check your site. Even if you proof out all updates, you still could have missed something.  Double read your content to avoid grammar or word form errors that spellcheck might miss.
  • Make sure your meta tags are working for you. Check all pages for descriptive title tags and accurate and relevant description and key word tags.  Make sure your targeted key words appear in your body text as well as your tags.
A few minutes here and there and go a long way in the overall success of your web site. Review your site's quality often with both functional and presentation criteria in mind.
